He told me Social Media was for Kids….I do like Camping

He told me social media was for kids. I said wasn’t that a commercial? TRIX1 272x300 He told me Social Media was for Kids....I do like Camping Ah no, that was Trix. Hmm, funny how a commercial sticks but I never did eat Trix. You can stick your head in the sand and believe we are riding horses and not driving cars. However, if you do you’ll either get run over or left behind or worse both. If you don’t have a face book fan page, a twitter account and a you tube channel you are missing conversations that are giving your competitors and collaborators the edge. It has become a necessary tool to use to develop and manage your brand.

The traditional advertising world is dying. What has replaced those forms of advertising is using new technology to magnify old methods of building your business. We all know word of mouth advertising is the greatest form of advertising. If you take the view that the new technology is nothing more than taking your existing customer base and interacting with them digitally you’ll “get it.”

Just keep it simple. This brave new world of Tweets, and texts, and blogs is nothing more than a new way to communicate your unique value proposition to more people. After all, your customers already know you’re the greatest dentist, vet, plumber or candle stick maker in town. It’s just the rest of the folks that don’t know. Social media, blogging, email lists, e-books, videos all just give you the opportunity to create a larger tent.

In this larger tent there’s more conversations, more people listening to you when they want to on their schedule. You’ve all gotten the phone call about the broken fridge or chipped tooth or “funny” noise in the engine and because you knew what you were talking about the next thing you knew you had a life long customer. On the other hand you’ve written checks for thousands to some yellow page salesman and wondered “why?,why?”, especially in the last few years.

In other words, we’ve come back full circle to word of mouth advertising via technology. Now we can use the new technologies to do 24/7 in thousands of spots what we used to do when they called or walked in our doors. Are you jumping up and down for joy. Go ahead I promise it won’t be on you tube tonight. One final thought, what does this all really mean for you as a Tucson local business? It means that the “whales” have become vulnerable as we enter a time when local is in and big box is out. The minnows have the power. Seize the day and the new technology available to you. It all depends on you and your commitment to return to the days of old and move into the new age of marketing at the same time.

  1. Hi!! I’m cigarette BUTT-MAN not to be confused with the butt man character Kramer portrayed in Seinfeld!!! I’ve been collecting butts in the car park for a few days now as part of my community service program, this is my punishment for doing something stupid and getting another DUI.

  2. As a reformed smoker this was the big question for me because I’d seen so many images of a smokers lungs and was well aware of the havoc that the tar and toxins contained in a cigarette causes to healthy lungs and because I’d been a pretty heavy smoker for at least 20 years then I knew that my lungs would be in a pretty bad state. I decide though that if I was prepared to put effort into quitting smoking then what I really wanted to get as quickly as possible was tar free lungs and a fresh start.

  3. Wow, I have a blog too but I can’t write as well as you do. Good stuff. My ICQ:325850109

  4. OMG? I thought this was blue jeans and then I noticed it was VIDEO GAMES! My ears had to do a double take :)

  5. Promote one thing of ‘worth’ and you’ll even flip a promotion into ‘content material’ :) I have heard the ninety/10 rule works best, but the point is, whether or not its 80/20 or ninety/10 or 75/25 doesn’t subject as much as how VALUABLE is the CONTENT you are handing over :-) In case you follow ninety nine/1 and your ninety nine% content is irrelavant, untimely, and simply undeniable worthless for your readership, you actually don’t have a 99/1 ratio ;-)

  6. Members of Congress, as well as the President, swear to uphold the Constitution. If the people want something that is unconstitutional, they should be told, no. Thats no different than when we tell our children no when something is not in their best interest. Thank God for the party of no. At least they understand the Constitution.

  7. “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.”
