Ever heard of back linking? What if you could see what your competitors and authority sites are doing with their back links would that interest you? Knowledge is power and if you know what is going on behind the scenes on your competitors websites can help you become more competitive in your Local Business niche.

Here’s the definition of back linking it is inbound links to a specific webpage on your site. The first step is that you look at the links. My favorite since I use fire fox is SEOpen. With a right click of the mouse you have instance access to how many links are on Google, Yahoo, and Bing. With Yahoo’s Site Explorer or SEOBook you can see the links and what  anchor text is being used and the URL that is being used. If you as a local business are considering jumping in the SEO game they will need all the above. The object of the game is to do your dead level best to your site linked to the same sites.

So what? Why? What difference does it make?

1.  Ranking on the Search Engine is largely dependent on back links and so knowing what your competition is essential and will help you make a

plan.

2.  Brand, reputation and online presence need to match up to your competitions links so you are seen next to them and give your target choices.

Think about a grocery story, all the similar items are in the same way. This is what effective SEO will do for you and this part of matching up with competitors is essential. You must also not only now the WHO but the WHY of why the linking is being done.  As a local business involved in online marketing you must be prepared to spend 100’s of hours playing this game to be competitive. Anyone that tells you different should cause red flags to go off for you.

Once you know the who and why of the links what’s next. Use and abuse the links in the following ways:

1. What are the links are linking and where do they point to:

For instance if they are connected to a PR (press release).

  • Did your competitor use particular strategies to create the release?
  • Are you a good copy  cat. What about planning a event that is the same as your competitor?
  • Peel your eyes and look at your competitors PR and look for the locales that host their content. Jump first with an exclusive before you release a PR. Bloggers and media love to get information first before it’s out to the general public.

Also be on the look out for the sensational factor.

  • What was so sensational about the piece and what was the subject?
  • What were the strategies that were used to launch the information: blogging, PR, twitter?
  • What thought leaders and authority sites bit and linked?
  • Where on the social bookmarking and media world was the piece placed?
  1. Certainly by following this protocol you will find numerous distribution points to host your stunning content. New outlets mean more exposure which equals more visits and more money. So the solution write a piece right now that is terrific, interesting and gets the attention it deserves and put in the same place as your competitors. I have heard that info graphics are the latest rage.

Unfortunately, as in all mining operations you have to wade through the dirt ( so polite) to find the nuggets. But it comes pretty fast. Many of links are trash in that they are cost your competitor money. Do you want to do that? Well you are going to pay one way or another but quality is key. Again, quality is key so be sure if you hire an outside source be sure they are getting you links are as high PR (page rank) as possible.

Doing all the research in the world won’t help you to know the WHY. Look for , ask, think and find the WHY and you’ll develop long term partnerships that deliver quality consistent links for your Local Business in your venture into the SEO game
